Following recent speculation in Macau that the SAR will soon take over administration of Hengqin, the special zone in neighboring Zhuhai, Hong Kong’s finance chief has indicated that he, too, is taking a look at areas near the Shenzhen border for development, ostensibly to ease the city’s chronic housing shortage.
Could it be possible that this thought process and inspection leads to something bigger?
It seems less likely in Hong Kong’s case, because unlike Zhuhai, Shenzhen does not have much space to spare its neighbor. The Qianhai special zone is more advanced in its development than Hengqin, and appears to be more focused on commercial development, anyway. But still, never say never.
