The feasibility study report of the Guangzhou-Zhanjiang high-speed rail project has been approved and is expected to start construction by the end of the year, with completion set for 2024. Costing around RMB100 billion, the project will shorten the journey between the provincial capital and its southernmost city, facing Hainan, to two hours. It currently takes 17 hours.
Trains on the route will travel at 350 km/h. The new main line will start from Guangzhou Railway Station, then travel southwest, passing through Foshan and Zhaoqing to reach the Zhanjiang North Railway Station.
Targets for annual passenger flows are:
2030: 32 million
2035: 41 million
2045: 52 million
