Shenzhen’s Immigration Bureau is offering a reward of up to RMB500 to whistle-blowers who report foreigners that have been staying, entering and working in China illegally, according to the Shenzhen Daily.
RMB500 yuan is given for each person detained for administrative purposes and RMB300 for each person given an administrative fine.
The move is seen as the latest effort by the city to push away unqualified foreigners. Many of them have overstayed in the country as a freelance English teacher or on a tourism visa. The new policy is in sync with Shenzhen’s effort to upgrade itself to an innovation-driven economy. While professional talents are being courted aggressively, lower-skilled workers from the traditional manufacturing sectors are finding it difficult to have a place in Shenzhen.
