The Greater Bay Area “Veggie Basket” project is under way. A joint effort between the governments of Guangzhou and Hong Kong, the project aims to provide a common safety standard for all agricultural products produced and sold within the region. It also is seen as a way to boost sales outside of the region, as it will help to raise standards and will likely be welcomed in other markets in China.
A standardized system of safety measures will be implemented, based on the existing supervision and administration measures for inspection and quarantine of agricultural products used in the Hong Kong and Macau markets. The project also looks to directly supply GBA cities with this farm produce by launching branded sections in supermarkets and traditional wet markets.
Production bases will embrace agricultural biotechnology, focusing on ecological preservation, while at the same time promoting scientific education, as well as developing leisure tourism.
