Guangdong’s four major color television brands, Skyworth, TCL, Changhong, and Konka, saw their sales of high-definition 4K sets surge in Q1: together they sold 6.489 million units, up 44.2% from the previous quarter.
The past long weekend apparently brought a bumper crop for the TV makers, too. According to Southern Metropolis Daily, Guangdong brands accounted for half of the sales by the country’s top 10 brands during the three-day Dragon Boat Festival. The news outlet cited data from online electronic retail platform Suning.com.
Prices are clearly a big driver of the demand. On the Suning platform, a 55-inch 4K TV from any of the Guangdong brands is selling for as low as RMB2,000, while a 65-inch 4K TV was selling at RMB3,000.
The big four have enjoyed a key regional advantage: complete supply chains nearby. Guangdong was the first province to focus on developing clusters for 4K TV production. It produces not only TV sets, but is the leader in 4K chips and display panels. Skyworth is tops in 4K set-top boxes, while Huawei’s HiSilicon subsidiary accounts for more than half of the 4K chips market.
